Poster contest winners

Two Foster students and one Hawthorne artist are the winners in this year’s Smokey Bear Poster Contest held in local elementary schools this spring, in which mostly fourth-grade students painted fire prevention posters. Brooke Dodge (Foster) drew the “Fire Safety” poster with the camp trailer, which will be placed along Quartzville Road at Sunnyside Park. Kailey James (Foster) drew the “Keep Forests Safe” poster with the Angry Fire and the bucket of water. It will be located on Highway 20 across from The Point restaurant. Brianna Lewis (Hawthorne) drew the “Prevent Wildfires” poster with Smokey Bear. It will be located three miles up the Calapooia River from Hwy 228. The three winners’ posters were copied to large plywood sheets by Sweet Home High School art students. Above, from left, are Brooke Dodge, Courtney Cross, Ashlyn Robinson, Amber Doles, Kiesha Goble, Kailey James, Aurora Sherwood, Makayla Stafford, Adanna Spencer, Adam Rose, Jahcobey Kirby and Neil Miller of the Oregon Department of Forestry, who coordinated the contest. Not pictured is high schooler Elizabeth Doboling, who also assisted. Below, at right with her poster, is Brianna, who also was unable to be present for the photo above. The three winners will not only have their posters displayed all summer, but are invited to ride on the Oregon Department of Forestry float in the Sportsman’s Holiday Parade.
