Sweet Home’s Travis Ramoz played a career round to win the Sweet Home-Lebanon Invitational at Mallard Creek Wednesday, April 22.
Ramoz was two over par with a 38 as he came up to the turn at the ninth hole, which he birdied, then played a scorching 33 on the back nine, adding five more birdies to win the tournament with a 71, the best 18-hole round by a Sweet Home golfer in nearly 20 years according to Coach Tom Horn. Ramoz bested the Mallard Creek record of 72, shot last year by Taylor Huschka.
The Huskies scored their best team total of the year, a 358, to tie for fourth in the seven-team tournament.
McMinnville had four players under 90 to win the team competition with a 322, followed by Sisters (325), Dallas (354), Junction City and Sweet Home (358), Lebanon (371) and Tillamook (385).
Jake Riggs finished second for the Huskies with a 91, while Paul Kim was third with a 95, birdying the final hole. Jerome Coleman (101) and Jason Rice (115) rounded out the scoring five for Sweet Home.
McMinnville’s Grant Gelland was runner-up with a 76, while Sisters’ Johnathon Standon was third with a 77.
The boys play at Mallard Creek again on Thursday, April 28, hosting a Val-Co match at 1 p.m. With district two weeks away, Horn said he’s hoping the Huskies will continue their recent acceleration.
“Maybe this will jump start us to a good finish to the year and another trip to state,” he said.
