Rescue on the fly

A 68-year-old man with apparent life-threatening injuries was air-lifted from the site of a head-on crash on Highway 20 Thursday evening.

Robert Walter Graf of Portland was taken by REACH Air Ambulance to Samaritan Regional Medical Center.

According to Sgt. Jeff Lynn of the Sweet Home Police Department, Graf was headed westbound just after 5 p.m. in a white 2003 Ford pickup, when his vehicle drifted into the eastbound lanes, striking an eastbound red 1999 Dodge Dakota driven by Kimberly Sue Gray, 39, of Sweet Home at 6099 Main St, in front of the Waterhole Tavern.

It isn’t clear why Graf’s truck drifted over the line, Lynn said. Graf reported being tired and remembered driving past the lake.

Gray and her passenger were taken to Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital with minor injuries, said Sgt. Jason Van Eck.

Graf was doing better than anticipated Friday at Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Lynn said.

The area crash team, MAIT, responded to investigate the crash, Lynn said. The investigation remains open, and no citations have been issued.

Medics and police responded to the crash at 5:24 p.m.
