After a good round in their own invitational tournament, Sweet Home’s boys had two tough rounds of golf last week, placing third in a Val-Co match they hosted on Tuesday, April 29, and seventh at the Junction City Invitational on Friday.
At Diamond Woods in Junction City the Huskies were seventh in a seven-team field, shooting 398, far behind leader Creswell (351) and runner-up Junction City (349).
“We were way out of it,” Coach Tom Horn said of the scores.
Jake Riggs led Sweet Home with a 96 on a course that played “very difficult,” Horn said.
“This is the first time this year that they played the rules of golf where you don’t touch your ball,” he said.
Travis Ramoz was second for the Huskies, shooting 97, followed by Paul Kim (102) and Jerome Coleman (103).
Horn said he’s encouraged by Coleman’s progress.
“I’m seeing Jerome as getting it together a little bit,” he said. “I’m impressed with some f things Jerome been doing on golf course, driving range. He just has to learn to manage his ball on the course.”
In the April 28 Val-Co match at Mallard Creek, the Huskies were missing Ramoz, who had set the course record for a high school student the week before when he shot a 71.
The record only lasted a week, though, as Newport’s Ross Martin finished with a 68.
“It was just an outstanding score,” Horn said.
The Huskies did not play well on their home course, he said, with the exception of Riggs, who played “a really good match, his best match of the year,” shooting a lifetime low score of 40-43-83.
Mike Fontenot was second for Sweet Home with a 98, and Kim and Jason Rice finished with 102 each.
Newport finished first with a 337, followed by Taft (349), Sweet Home (385) and Central (400).
“We didn’t play well,” Horn said.
The Huskies were scheduled to play Tuesday at Oak Knoll, but host Central has cancelled all its athletic events this week, Horn said, due to concerns about the swine flu.
That leaves Sweet Home with a week to go before the district tournament Monday at Trysting Tree in Corvallis.
The Sweet Home girls did not compete last week, due to a shortage of players.
