Robert Edwards

Robert Franklin “Bob” Edwards, 89, of Albany died on Monday at his home.

He was born in Salem on May 18, 1919 the son of Arthur and Tina Edwards. He was reared on the family farm in Turner and graduated from Turner High School in 1937.

He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps and then at Woolworth’s in Salem.

He married Frances Clark in 1941 and moved to Sweet Home.

He served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. After his military service, he returned to Sweet Home where he enjoyed careers in the lumber, oil and real estate industries, eventually retiring from the school district 27 years ago.

In 1972, he married Melva Blower, with whom he spent 36 years. They lived in Sweet Home until 1991, when they moved to Albany.

Mr. Edwards always enjoyed working with his hands, whether it was woodworking, being a driveway mechanic or baiting a fish hook. He also liked hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and gardening. He especially enjoyed spending time and telling stories with family and friends.

In 2007, his family was proud when he was honored at the annual Veterans Day Ceremonies for his service in World War II. He could still fit into his uniform from his days in the Pacific.

He was an active member of the American Legion, Post 10; the VFW; Elks Club; and Lions. He attended Albany United Methodist Church.

Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife, Melva; sons, Dale and Nancy Edwards of Albany and Lee and Ruth Edwards of Houston, Texas; stepson, Rodney and wife, Phyllis Blower of Duvall, Wash; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Memorial services were held on June 16 at the Albany United Methodist Church.
