Scouting for Food 2004

For The New Era

The yearly “Scouting for Food” event has been scheduled for Saturday, November 20, which will coincide with the annual Civil War football game between OSU and U of O. This year, Scouts are asking the community to donate canned food and non-perishable items in support of their favorite team, either Oregon State Beavers or the University of Oregon Ducks! Here is your opportunity to show everyone who the top team REALLY is!

There will be a “Duck Truck” and a “Beaver Truck”. Each truck will be weighed separately at the conclusion of the event. Get your neighborhood game plan ready to support your favorite team! We are hoping to once again have local radio support from KFIR providing the Sweet Home area with hourly updates and follow-up information for the event.

Sweet Home area Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops will participate in canvassing their neighborhoods in full uniform for non-perishable canned goods to help replenish our community food bank for the upcoming holidays. Again this year, the Holley and Crawfordsville areas will be joining the event, with drop boxes in place Saturday, November 20, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at both the Crawfordsville Market and the Holley Store.

Last year, Scouting units in Oregon and Southwestern Washington collected more than 400,000 pounds of food which went to benefit local hunger relief agencies.

If the Scouts should miss your home, you may also drop off donations on Saturday, November 20 at the LBCC/Mollie’s Bakery parking lot area collection site between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11:45 am. Some suggested donation items are peanut butter, tuna, beans, soups, chili, pasta, rice, canned vegetables and fruits, macaroni & cheese, and holiday menu items such as cranberry sauce, jello, pumpkin, stuffing mix and yams.

Also welcomed are donations of household paper products, laundry, dish, and hand soap, and school supplies. All items collected in Sweet Home will be delivered to Sweet Home Emergency Ministries (SHEM) directly following the event. SHEM has relied on the Scouting for Food event for many years to supplement the growing need in our community for emergency food boxes, and especially during the upcoming holidays.

This worthy service project invites and welcomes community participation, and we hope that each one of you make time to address the problem of hunger in our area.

If you have questions concerning the event, please feel free to contact either Jeff Rice, at 367-8074 or Casey Hanscam at 367-2285, Sweet Home Area 2004 Scouting for Food Co-Chairmen.
