SH falls to Newport in girls hoops league opener

Newport 36, Sweet Home 27

The Huskies were defeated 36-27 by Newport in girls basketball on the road Friday, but they played competitively and showed significant improvement at the foul line.

“It just seems like the ball didn’t go in for us,” Coach John Barnes said. “But we were aggressive, and we did shoot 70 percent from the free throw line.”

The Huskies trailed 7-5 after one quarter and 15-10 at halftime. After three quarters, Newport led 24-17.

During the middle of the fourth, the Huskies cut the lead to three, getting within striking range of a win.

But Newport shot well from the free throw line too, Barnes said. The Cubs made a few baskets and finished with the win.

In the first half, the Huskies looked “kind of complacent,” as if waiting for something to happen, Barnes said. They were fired up after a halftime talk.

“It was exciting to compete,” he said. Scoring was even through all four quarters. Failure to capitalize on a few things in the first half probably cost Sweet Home the game.

“Again, the effort in the second half was outstanding,” Barnes said. The team did a good job boxing out Newport’s post Sam Moore at the boards.

Courtnee Cuilla pulled down six rebounds on the game, Barnes said. Annie Whitfield had four, and Emili Riggs did a nice job defending against Moore.

Cascade 65, Sweet Home 26

No. two-ranked Cascade defeated the Huskies 65-26 at home on Jan. 5.

The Cougars built a 13-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and 23-17 by halftime. The Huskies were scoreless in the third, while Cascade added 14 points.

“We were down six at halftime,” Barnes said. “We broke their press and felt really good going into halftime. We were 0-17 in the third quarter. They obviously were not 0-17. All of the sudden, we were down by 20.”

Cascade really broke open the game in the third quarter, he said.

Barnes was happy with the way the Huskies competed in the first half, when the team played about as well as it could, he said, but overall, they suffered from poor shooting, including shooting 3-12 from the foul line.
