SH qualifies in 7 state track events

Sweet Home wasn’t really in contention for the boys and girls district track title last weekend, but the Huskies did not go quietly, qualifying eight athletes in seven events for state.

Considering that only one of them was considered a shoo-in before the meet began, Coach Billy Snow was very pleased.

“They had a good meet,” he said, with emphasis on “good.”

“I always dope the meet out and boy, was I close. Usually there are not a lot of surprises, but they scored more points than I had them scoring, especially on the girls side.”

Snow said he had both the girls and boys scoring 77 points and finishing fifth. They both did finish fifth in the team standings, but the girls scored 91.75, while the boys finished with 74 – after a disqualification in the short relay.

Jakob Hiett ran away with the league title in the 3000 and Ben Terry won the shot put with a personal best of 45-9½.

There were no state champions on the girls side, but Nicole Rasmussen qualified for state in the 3000, Kaitlyn Watts in the discus, India Porter in the triple jump, and Porter combined with Haley and Courtney Kent and Josie Knight to take second in the girls 4×100 relay, good for Sweet Home’s fifth straight trip to state in that event.

Spencer Knight finishes third in one of the fastest 100-meter times ever for a Sweet Home athlete, behind Cottage Grove’s Gaige Macomber, second from right, and Elmira’s Garrett Lewellen, right

Hiett, a sophomore, was almost guaranteed a state berth in the 3000, in which he led the rest of the league’s distance runners by 36 seconds going into districts, cruised fairly leisurely through the first two-thirds of the race Thursday as he paced teammates Justin Webb (9:53.80) and Ian Wingo (9:56.42) to personal bests and fifth and sixth place respectively before pulling away to win in 9:18.31.

On Saturday he placed second by 2½ seconds to Sisters’ Brandon Pollard, in 4:10.71 to qualify in that event as well.

“I wanted to pace off Brandon and push off on the third lap, but he did the same thing,” Hiett said. “I feel like I could go faster, but Brandon is fast.”

The surprises began on Thursday when Terry won the shot put with a personal-best throw of 45-9¼ to win by two inches.

“Honestly, I was expecting first or second place,” said the junior, who was able to compete in only four meets prior to district this season after throwing a nearly 3-foot personal best in the first meet of the year. He came back after missing a month and threw two more PR’s in the last three meets before district.

“I was throwing personal bests all season,” he said.

Watts, also a junior, said she was “really surprised” at suddenly notching her ticket for Hayward Field after finishing sixth and fifth the previous two years.

“I didn’t even get a personal record,” she said of her 89-9 qualifying throw, nearly 3 feet short of the PR she’d set in her last meet. “I’m really happy.”

For Porter, a sophomore who has turned heads with significant progress on the track, the qualification in the triple jump came as a little bit of a surprise, particularly since it was only her second attempt at the event.

“I expected to make it in the 400,” she said. “I’d only jumped once, and never in league.”

But Snow and her father, basketball coach Tim Porter, told her they thought she might be able to do it,” she said.

“We knew she had a big jump there,” Snow said. “You just don’t want to leave it dangling out there.

Porter’s other qualification came with short relay teammates Courtney and Haley Kent, both juniors, and freshman Knight. They came into the district seeded third, but Haley Kent said they were aware that Sisters was missing one of its core runners and they figured they had a good chance of qualifying for the fifth time.

Snow was enthusiastic about their success.

“That’s quite an accomplishment,” he said of the string, noting the variation of runners over the five-year stretch. “Even though we’re going in (to state) with the slowest time, it is still an accomplishment.”

He also noted the third-place finishers, the ones who just missed.

Junior Spencer Knight ran the sixth-fastest 100 in school history, 11.30, a PR by two-tenths of a second, but just missed qualifying as he was outleaned by Gaige Macomber of Cottage Grove (11.14) and Garrett Lewellen of Elmira (11.28).

“They were the fastest three in the state on Saturday,” Snow said.

Courtney Kent had a similar experience in the girls 300 hurdles, running the third-fastest time in school history (48.02), but finishing behind Jamilla Gambee of Junction City (47.56) and Michaela Miller of Sisters (47.89).

“You don’t get a whole lot faster than that,” Snow said of Kent’s time.

Other third-place finishers were junior Ashton Stutzman in the high jump (5-11), Sabrina Davis in the javelin in a PR of 104-1, Haley Kent in the 200 (27.69) and Porter in the 400 (1:01.67).

“We’ve got a tough league, particularly speed-wise,” Snow said, adding that he was pleased with the number of PRs the team produced. The girls set 11 in 33 events and the boys eight in 32.

“The neat thing is everybody going (to state) is an underclassman,” he said. “We’ll get them there, get them hungry and go from there.”
