The high school summer softball team played eight games this week, finishing 4-4.
They opened the week with a doubleheader at Junction City losing against an Elmira team and beating the Flamethrowers, a Eugene team.
The Huskies hosted their first summer home game in several years, losing 12-2 against an 18-year-old all-star gold team that included graduate Ashley Cochran of Sweet Home.
“It was a good chance for our kids to play tough competition,” said Coach Steve Hummer. Summer is about improving, and “although we got whipped, it was fun.”
The Huskies finished a tournament 3-2 over the weekend, defeating Park Rose, Newport and a Portland team and losing to teams from Forest Grove and Clark County.
“We played pretty well,” Hummer said. “We’ve gotten a lot better already. The only game we should have won but lost was Clark County.”
The Huskies just disappeared for an inning, Hummer said.
The team will play another 15 games, starting with a doubleheader at Junction City scheduled for Tuesday and a tournament at North Marion this weekend.
About 20 girls are playing on an 18-and-under team coached by Hummer and a 16-and-under team coached by Shane Cochran. Michelle and Mike Beaver are coaching a 12-and-under team, and the 10-and-under team finished second in a tournament last weekend to end its season.
