SHARC Showdown seeking contestants for Oct. 1 show

Talented individuals who wish to compete for cash and prizes are invited to participate in the third annual SHARC Showdown.

The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 1 in the Sweet Home High School auditorium. It is being held to raise money for improvements to the Sweet Home High School auditorium.

Contestants may register for the event at The New Era, 1313 Main St., or the Chamber of Commerce, 1575 Main St. A registration form will be available later on the event Facebook page.

Depending on the number of participants, a preliminary round may be held on Sept. 30.

Performances are limited to a maximum of six minutes.

The contest welcomes people with a variety of talents, which could include singing, acting, comedy, magic, dancing and much more.

The Sweet Home School District recently won a $1.4 million grant from the state to pay for seismic upgrades to the auditorium, said Shirley Austin, a member of the Sweet Home Auditorium Committee, which organizes the event.

“It does not cover things like the sound system, curtains, things like that.”

It’s not clear what may be replaced in the seismic project, and the School Board has agreed to pay for new lighting, Austin said, but more improvements are needed to turn the auditorium into a “performing arts center.”

Prizes include $500 in cash to first place, $250 for second and $100 for third. A children’s division is open to performers 12 and younger. Prizes include a laptop computer, a karaoke system and an Mp3 player.

A people’s choice award will include Oregon Jamboree passes for 2017 and other prizes. Fans, spectators, friends and family select the people’s choice by vote, by putting money into their favorite contestant’s jar. The contestant who raises the largest number of votes, cash, wins the prize.

Registration must be turned in by Sept. 27. Participation is free.

Admission is $5. For students, admission is $3. Admission is free for children 6 and younger.
