Following a full week of league games in the Oregon West Conference, the Sweet Home High School girls basketball team has had a tough time putting wins under their belt after losing 22-50 against the Newport Cubs (3-12) Jan. 23 and 15-52 at home against Philomath Warriors (12-3) Jan. 26.

The Huskies are currently ranked sixth in the Oregon West Conference. They’re 248th in the state, moving up three places since their last game, and 31st in the 4A division.

Although losing the game at home Jan. 26, “We came out and hit our goals for the game on the head,” Coach Erika Evans said. “We limited our turnovers, handled their press well, forced them into turnovers with our defense in the half court, and held them to 15 points less than many of our comparable opponents that have played them.” The Huskies had significantly fewer turnovers against the Warriors then they’ve had in past games, having only 24 throughout the game.

“It was definitely a night where we moved the needle as a family and broke a lot of glass ceilings. We saw a lot of victories that don’t necessarily translate on the scoreboard but show tons of growth as a group and we were very proud of our execution and effort,” Evans said. Sophomore player Aubrey Newberry had an outstanding 100% field goal percentage, making every shot she threw, all from the three point line, scoring a total nine points.

The SHHS girls will be back home playing against North Marion (7-10) Jan. 29 at 7 p.m, and will be playing against Stayton (11-3) Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
