Softball off to 3-1 start, with lone loss to 5A Redmond

Sweet Home softball started off the young season 3-1 after the first week’s play.

The Huskies beat Elmira/Mapleton 16-1 and won against Junction City 8-3, both games at home.

Then, competing in the Redmond Tournament, after the first day’s action Sweet Home had beaten La Pine 17-3 and lost to Redmond 8-6.

Pitcher Maddie Harris had three strikeouts against Elmira.

Brooke Burke went 4-4 at the plate with a double against the Falcons. Adisen Graber and Makayal Guthrie also hit doubles in the game.

“When you play against Elmira it’s always great to come out with a win,” Head Coach Karyn Hartsook said.

“We were definitely nervous – it’s been a while since we’ve played. But it was exciting to see our progress as players, athletes and people. We were able to string some hits together and score some runs.”

In the win against Junction City, Hartsook said her team faced “a little bit of a better pitcher” than it had seen in the previous game, but still managed to score enough runs to win.

Harris recorded four strikeouts in four innings pitched against the Tigers.

“It felt like it was a big learning game for us,” Hartsook said. “Junction City put the ball in play more than Elmira. Defensively, even though we had some errors, we had kids that made some key plays.”

Chloe Fairchild and Riley Watkins each had doubles on offense against the Tigers.

In the blowout of La Pine, Burke had the sole extra base for the Huskies with a double of her own.

In the next game against Redmond, Fairchild had a two-bagger and a single in the losing effort.
