Huskies Tasha Saunders and Shelbey Gillespie last week signed letters of intent to play softball at Chemeketa Community College.
“It’s a wonderful adventure,” said Coach Steve Hummer. “It’s a sad ending for us because you’re leaving.”
He congratulated the girls and their families for spending years and years of practice and going to softball games.
Gillespie and Saunders have played together the longest of the seniors graduating this year.
“I’m very excited,” Gillespie said. “We started God knows how many years ago. We were the original two playing together, and we’ve dreamt of playing together.”
Saunders will play in the outfield, and Gillespie is hoping to continue catching.
They are looking forward to small class sizes while attending community college.
“I like it because it’s small, like Sweet Home, and it’s close to home,” Saunders said. She is planning to transfer to Oregon Institute of Technology and complete a degree in ultrasound technology.
Gillespie will study physical therapy and transfer to Oregon State University.
Both may have the option to continue playing softball after transferring, but they don’t know yet whether they will.
