Central 2, Sweet Home 0
The Huskies lost their last softball game of the season at Central 2-0 on Thursday, finishing with 13-8 overall record and a 7-5 league record.
“Bayli Riggs pitched a very good game, holding Central to eight hits and two runs, but we could just not muster any kind of offense against them,” Coach Steve Hummer said.
“Their pitcher, Kayla Auer, is a senior and is just very good. She was the 4A pitcher of the year as a sophomore but missed last year due to injury. She is hitting her stride just in time for the playoffs and we just could not get much done.”
Riggs struck out seven batters and walked one, Hummer said. “I was very impressed with our defense overall. Hailee Huenergardt made an amazing backhand play as shortstop, and we were very solid.”
Emili Riggs and Shelbey Gillespie each had hits, Hummer said.
“I was proud of the way we competed in a game that meant nothing to us as far as the league standings,” Hummer said. “Central had to win it to be league champs, and our girls fought them hard.
In all-league voting last week, Emili Riggs was named to the first-team infield. Paige Niemi was named first-team utility player.
Second-team honors went to Laura Gourley, outfield; Gillespie, catcher; Tiffanie Cuilla, infield; and Bayli Riggs, pitcher.
Honorable mention went to Huenergardt, outfield, and Megan Rubidoux, infield.
