Off to a rapid start, the Sweet Home Baseball team is hoping to improve upon the previous season (1-20). The team currently consists of 12 guys: seven seniors, one junior, three sophomores and one freshman. With a new head coach at the helm, Evan Teter has many drawn-out goals ready for the team to take on.
“Last season was obviously rough looking at our record, but we had a solid group of athletes,” Teter said, “We struggled to perform in the big moments, but when we were on our game we could hang with just about anybody.”
Going into this year, the team lost eight seniors, but they luckily have three returning players who have been everyday starters at the varsity level. Those players include Jon Holly, Kelso Ellis and Kayden Gutierrez.
Other standout athletes who will have a big role this season include sophomore Cohen Gutierrez, freshman Kyle Zajic, sophomore Eddie Taylor, and senior Ethan Delibertis.
“Our team has a goal to have a state play in-game appearance and have listed many different ways we can make that happen,” Teter said. “This group lacks experience, but makes up for it with their positive mentality and grit. I’m very proud of their performance in the season so far and they are learning a lot every time they step on the field.”
Thus far, the team has played against Molalla 3-7, March 13, Madras 8-12, March 15, and Marshfield 1-6, March 16. Although these games struggle to reflect positively, in terms of score, Teter is still more than optimistic about the season.
Speaking about his team, he said, “They’re good guys to be around, and they deserve an opportunity to be successful. That’s what I want to do with this program and I’m going to do everything I can to help them with that.”
The Huskies will be playing away on March 21 at Junction City.
