In Sweet Home’s lone volleyball match of last week, the Huskies came up short, losing at Taft, 15-25, 19-25, and 18-25.

The Huskies, missing two starters, had some adjustments to make with their line up. Tabby Trahan, who had not set all year, and Amanda Basham shared that role. Also, in the first game, Jessalyn Seiber played middle blocker after making the shift back to outside and right side hitter.

With the jitters out of the way after the first game, including four missed serves, the Huskies settled down and played evenly with Taft in the second game until the end when the Tigers made a couple of runs. The third game was similar, in that Taft, with a strong front line, was able to put together longer strings of points and more kills.

Coach Debbie Danielson said she was pleased with the effort of the setters and also the improved attack percentages of Sara Brocard and Seiber. Brocard led Sweet Home with 10 kills and a high .364 rating while Seiber had eight kills and a .294 mark. Kayla Thompson added five kills.

Also, the Huskies corrected their service problems. After the slow start, the Huskies only committed one service error the rest of the match.

Sweet Home finishes its season with a road match at Newport on Tuesday, Oct. 24, and then the eight seniors will play their last match at home Thursday, Oct. 26, against league-leading Central. The Huskies will take on the role of spoilers if they can defeat Newport, which would put the Cubs out of contention for the state playoffs.

To get a win, the Huskies will have to defend against the short set to their middle hitters and the deep hits to the corners.

“We’ve seen them twice before so we know what they do,” said Danielson. “Sometimes we have difficulty making the adjustments during the game. Our goal now is to finish as strong as we can.”
