Spikers put Junction City away quickly, face Cottage Grove, Elmira this week

Sweet Home’s volleyball team made short work of Junction City last week, beating the Tigers 25-10, 25-15, 25-14 on the road Tuesday, Oct. 11.

The Huskies showed consistency – something Coach Alicia Meier has been aiming for in recent weeks.

“We were able to play consistent and we had really good serve and receive,” she said. “They’re still a pretty young team. They were struggling with passing and we were serving pretty good. They couldn’t get any rhythm or routine going.”

Megan Graville led Sweet Home with 10 kills, along with four digs and two blocks. Annie Whitfield contributed seven kills and Tiffany Miller had 30 assists for the night.

Meier said she was glad her team had a light week with Homecoming activities going on in Sweet Home, but this week is going to be tougher.

Sweet Home faces Cottage Grove at home on Tuesday in a battle of teams tied for third in the league at 4-3 each, and then will host Elmira, which beat Sisters last week but then had to forfeit due to an ineligible player, on Thursday.

“They’ve come on pretty strong,” Meier said of the Falcons. “If we can beat them, that will give us some momentum.

The Cottage Grove game will be a Pink Out night, in which fans are encouraged to wear pink as a statement of support in the fight against breast cancer. Thursday will be Senior Night.

Meier said the Huskies are playing at a good level.

“We definitely want to be playing our best ball,” she said. “They looked exactly where I wanted them to be against Junction City. I hope we can just continue that.”
