Sweet Home boys finish fifth in golf districts; two clear 200

Sweet Home finished fifth in the seven-team Special District 2 boys golf championship tournament held May 9-10 at Tokatee Golf Club at McKenzie Bridge.

The Huskies shot a two-day team total score of 804, led by senior Carson Perry’s 94-97-191.

Senior Morgan Sands finished second, shooting 96-98-194 for Sweet Home, and sophomore Chet Garrett (108-98-206) and senior Joseph Hiemenz (105-108-213) rounded out the team score.

Freshman Easton Perry finished with 122-108-231.

“Both Chet and Easton definitely improved off the first day, which is a good sign for next year,” Coach Ron Moore said. “It was a tough weekend, with the weather and what-not.”

He said that Carson Perry showed the most improvement this year among the varsity scorers. The younger golfers are raising hopes for next year.

“Chet has improved about 10 strokes from last year and Easten has improved considerably. We have some promising golfers coming up for next year.”

Marist finished as district champion, with a team score of 650, followed by Cascade with a 680.

Cascade’s Ramsey Gordon shot 79-74-153 and Ben Prouix of Marist finished with 76-77-153 to tie for the individual championship.

They, along with Marshfield, which shot 689, qualified for the state tournament on May 16-17 at Quail Valley. Woodburn’s Ty Beyer qualified for state as an individual, placing third overall with a 79-78-157.

Rounding out the team scoring were Woodburn, fourth with 700, Sweet Home with 804, Stayton with 864 and Junction City with 887. Newport had three golfers in the competition, one short of a scoring team.

Senior Bailey Womack, Sweet Home’s only varsity golfer, had a conflict and was only able to play one day of the girls tournament at Bandon Crossing, so she did not qualify for state, Moore said.
