Sweet Home falls to big-play Bulldogs

Sweet Home matched North Bend big play for big play in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs throttled the Huskies from that point on en route to a 34-14 victory.

Each team posted two touchdowns in the first quarter with North Bend scoring first on a 18-yard pass from Dalton Iveans to Bryce Weidman. The Huskies struck back immediately with a pass play of their own, a 44-yard strike from Keenan Martin to Kevin McGuyre.

Within one minute both teams had chalked up an additional touchdown. For North Bend, the speedy Cameron Seiger, who rushed for 195 yards, returned a Husky kickoff 83 yards to the Sweet Home seven-yard line. On the next play, Cody Harden put up six more points in the Bulldog column.

Not to be outdone, Sam Macklin returned the North Bend kickoff 54 yards to set up another Martin-to-McGuyre touchdown, this one from 22 yards out.

From that point, only the Bulldogs managed to score again, once in each of the next three quarters. Twice the Huskies advanced as far as the North Bend 20, only to be stopped on fourth down plays.

North Bend, who reached the state semifinals in the previous two years, accumulated 483 yards, 379 on the ground. Four runners had at least 60 yards total. Though Iveans was only 5-16 passing, his completions were at least ten yards each, giving him 104 on the night. Defensively, the Huskies didn’t have an answer for the speed of North Bend.

“We attacked well, but we missed tackles that you can’t miss and expect to win,” said head coach Rob Younger.

The Bulldogs focused on shutting down leading Husky runner Amos Parmenter, who carried only six times for four total yards. Trevur Byers and Josh Ward were the leading runners for Sweet Home with 41 yards each. After Martin went 7-13 for 109 yards in the first half, he failed to complete any of the four passes he threw in the second half. McGuyre and fullback Brent Moyer each caught 3 passes.

Sweet Home travels to 4-1 Philomath this Friday to start Val-Co League competition.

The record may be slightly deceiving because the Warriors have had an easier schedule than the Huskies, though they did narrowly defeat Stayton, one of the four Sweet Home losses.

“We play the difficult schedule to prepare us for the league season and hopefully state playoffs,” explained Younger. “It exposes weaknesses you need to work on and the strengths we have.”

Now it’s a matter of the players believing they can win. Younger thinks they are ready but knows the Warrior matchup is a defining moment in the season.

“You take what you’ve learned and develop offensive and defensive packages that put players into a position to maximize success,” Younger continued. “I think we’ve got a good handle on it.”
