The Sweet Home School District Clothing Closet reopened May 4 at River of Life Fellowship, 1658 Long St., for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Hours are 1 to 3:30 p.m. on early release Wednesdays while school is in session.
Operated by District Health Services Project Director Kristi Walker, who launched the effort in 2018, the Clothing Closet has been distributing clothes to children and families by appointment during the pandemic, which has had a limited draw.
“It was extremely successful in the past, but has not been successful this year at all,” she said. “That’s why I said, ‘We need to reopen and get through some of these clothes. I know there’s kids that need clothes.'”
Freshly laundered, gently used clothing may be given to Walker at the District Office at 1920 Long St. or to the Clothing Closet itself. Its inventory also includes shoes, school supplies, toiletries and blankets. Items with holes and stains are removed.
Children who attend district schools, as well as their family members, can pick up the clothing.
