Sweet Home woman gets 5½ years for attempted assault

Sara Ann Bejar-Suarez was sentenced to 67½ months in prison Friday in Linn County Circuit Court in connection to an shooting incident in May.

She pleaded no contest to attempted first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon against another person. A charge of attempted murder was dismissed.

For unlawful use of a weapon, she was sentenced to 60 months in prison. For attempted assault, she was sentenced to 30 months in prison, with 22 ½ months concurrent and 7½ months consecutive to the unlawful use of a weapon charge.

She was ordered to pay $200 in fines and fees, and the court found that Bejar-Suarez was an alcoholic or drug-dependent person and directed the Department of Corrections to place her in an appropriate alcohol or drug treatment program.

Sweet Home police arrested Bejar-Suarez on May 28 after they responded to a report of shots fired at 1810 Yucca St.

Police located her ex-boyfriend Corey Valentine unharmed but shaken by the incident, according to Police Chief Jeff Lynn. He reported that his ex-girlfriend had confronted him at the location and fired a single shot with a semi-automatic pistol.

Based on their investigation, police believed the incident was likely related to an ongoing child custody dispute between the two.

Police found Bejar-Suarez hiding under a bed in a residence about a block and a half away, Lynn said.
