A record 143 runners and walkers turned out Saturday, Feb. 11, at Sankey Park for the third annual Sweetheart Run.
Tanner Sayers, 16, of Sweet Home ran 19:34 to win the 5K race Saturday, and Jeanie Korn, 39, also of Sweet Home, was second overall and the top female finisher in 22:59.
Patrick Brown, 25, of Monmouth (39:22) edged Michael Brown, 27, also of Monmouth (39:23) in the 10K to win that race. The first female finisher in the 10K was Tracy Lampman , 50, of Eugene, in 47:32.
A total of 20 children participated in the mile fun run, for which results were not recorded.
Shirley Shaw, 66, of Corvallis was the top 10K masters runner, finishing in 58:47, ahead of Jay Kitchin, 69, of Vancouver, Wash., who was the men’s 10K masters winner, in 1:05.21.
Lin Louie, 65, of Sweet Home was the top masters 5K finisher, in 43:27. No male masters runners finished the 5K.
Organizers said the race raised in the neighborhood of $4,000 for Boys and Girls Club Summer Program scholarships. Those proceeds included $180 in raffle ticket sales for some $1,500 in raffle prizes donated by 21 Sweet Home merchants. Runners each received one free ticket and could purchase more.
Now-traditional biscuits and gravy were served after the event on Weddle Bridge. Umpqua Bank provided hot drinks and 20 volunteers from Holley Church served food and helped as course marshals and with registration. Sportsman Holiday Court members handed finisher medals to runners as they crossed the finish line. Mayor Greg Mahler awarded overall and placement awards.
