Terry Smock

Terry Edmond Smock, 69, a former Sweet Home resident, died June 22, 2009 in Newport.

He was born March 9, 1940 in Portland to Lalah (Bush) Smock and Carl Smock.

He attended Beaverton High School before serving in the Navy, where he was stationed at Whidbey Island and served two tours on the USS Ranger as a navigator on A3D twin-engine jets.

After leaving the service Mr. Smock attended Moler Barber College in Portland, working as a barber in Pilot Rock, in Sweet Home €“ where he owned two shops, and in Lebanon until 1977.

He also worked for the U.S. Forest Service while in Sweet Home. He also earned an associate of arts degree at Chemeketa Community College.

Mr. Smock married Nancy Shepherd on June 1, 1957 in Vancouver, Wash. They later divorced but stayed life partners.

After living in this area, he moved his family to Newport to become a commercial fisherman for more than 20 years. He and Nancy, along with their children, fished for salmon, tuna, and crab

on a number of vessels, one of which he built in his barn on Old Holley Road.

Mr. Smock’s favorite and lifelong pastime was hunting. Family vacations were spent hunting with the family in tow. He taught his children and grandchildren to all love and appreciate the sport.

Mr. Smock is survived by his son Terry and daughter-in-law Elizabeth of Sandy; daughters and sons-in-law Cynthia and Craig Bruce of Newport, Lori and Wayne Reining III of Albany, and Lalah Smock Hillier of South Beach; stepmother Ginette Smock of Lebanon; numerous nieces and nephews; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lalah (Bush) Smock in 1968; father Carl Smock in 1982; sister Carlita Smock Wolfe in 1982; and brother Thomas Smock in 1993.

A family gathering will be held to spread his ashes at the family hunting grounds. A bench bearing his name will be placed on the waterfront in Newport in his memory.
