The Huskies finished boys summer basketball on July 1 after a relatively tough season for their young team.
It was an opportunity for the young athletes to gain experience before stepping onto the court to replace eight seniors who left the team this year, Coach Kostanty Knurowski said. The Huskies were also shorthanded at times with other players, such as Jeremy White and Justin Rice, spending time this summer on the diamond.
The Huskies played two teams this summer, with 35 to 40 games between them, said Knurowski. The teams won about 15 games. Between 20 and 25 players were on the team throughout the summer.
“We weren’t as successful as we’d been in the past,” Knurowski said. “We had some kids get some good experience.”
The last two years, the Huskies have had brought a lot of seniors to the game, he said. The younger players were competitive but not as successful in the win-loss columns.
The Huskies had an incoming freshman and sophomores playing varsity level ball, he said. “I’m really kind of pleased. It was a good opportunity, and it gave me a chance to watch them and see what they could do. From time to time, I was pleasantly surprised.”
Departing seniors included Gavin Kauffman, Paul Kim, Jason Rice, Nick Lloyd, Taylor Mauch, Chris Webb, Cody Felkins and Robert Rubidoux.
Kauffman recently signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Chemeketa Community College, Knurowski said.
The Huskies are helping run a team camp for third- through eighth-graders this week at Sweet Home High School.
