Transient faces string of charges after arrests

A 20-year-old transient was arrested in eight cases over the past week, starting with the burglary of Dairy Queen on Oct. 27.

Police arrested Daniel Joseph Browand for second-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief on Oct. 27 after multiple callers reported an alarm at Dairy Queen at about 10:45 p.m.

He is accused of entering Dairy Queen through the drive-through window, said Police Chief Jeff Lynn. Police were able to access video surveillance with Dairy Queen employees.

Upon leaving the restaurant, an employee recognized a male subject sitting in a vehicle in the 1300 block of Nandina Street from the surveillance video and contacted police. The police located Browand in the vehicle and arrested him.

Police also charged Browand with third-degree theft in connection to a shoplifting report from Safeway at about the same time. A Safeway employee reported that someone had taken a $1 bottle of soda.

On Oct. 28, a Sweet Home High School employee called police to report the theft of Sweet Home Mat Club shirts the previous day, Lynn said. Someone had broken in through the box office window and grabbed several of the shirts.

Lynn said Browand was wearing a Sweet Home Mat Club shirt when police arrested him on Oct. 27, Lynn said. Police arrested him on Oct. 29 at 7:26 a.m. for third-degree theft and second-degree criminal mischief in connection to the case.

Later on Oct. 29, 12:42 p.m., police arrested Browand for second-degree criminal trespass from an apartment at 1890 Kalmia St.

On Oct. 30, police charged Browand in three more cases.

At 8:32 a.m., police received a report of a man carrying a garbage can and several boxes, yelling and screaming. A second caller observed the man enter the backyard of an unoccupied residence in the 1700 block of Long.

Police responded, and an officer reported seeing Browand inside the vacant house, Lynn said. The officer arrested Browand for first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief and first-degree criminal trespass.

During that time, police received a report of a burglary at an apartment at 1890 Kalmia St., the same place he had been arrested for trespassing, Lynn said. Officers located property from 1890 Kalmia St. at the vacant Long Street residence.

Police charged Browand for first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief and first-degree criminal trespass in connection to the case.

Additionally, a resident neighboring the apartment complex in the 1800 block of Kalmia reported the theft of a garbage can, Lynn said. Police charged Browand with third-degree theft in connection to the case.

Browand was lodged at Linn County Jail and then released after arraignment, Lynn said. Police arrested him for third-degree theft on Nov. 2 at 1810 Main St., Main Street Market, at about 8 p.m. after a report of a person stealing food items.

Police responded to multiple additional calls last week involving Browand that didn’t result in arrest, Lynn said. On Monday, police located him sleeping in the portable toilet at the skate park, but he wasn’t charged.

Prior to this chain of contacts, Sweet Home police had no record of contact with Browand, Lynn said, and he’s not aware of a department that had.
