Two sentenced in animal abuse case

Richard Reed Stevens, 64, pleaded no contest and was sentenced in Linn County Circuit Court last week in an animal neglect case.

He entered the plea agreement under the condition that he receive no jail time.

Stevens pleaded no contest to second-degree animal neglect and a wildlife violation. Twenty-two counts of second-degree animal neglect and a charge of wasting wildlife were dismissed.

He was sentenced to five years probation and 10 days compensatory service. He was ordered to pay $1,100 in restitution to Linn County Animal Rescue and $800 to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. He also must pay $204 in fees and assessments. He may not hold a hunting license for two years.

In connection to the same case, Melissa Leeann Corliss pleaded guilty to seven counts of second-degree animal neglect in June. Sixteen counts of second-degree animal neglect, a wildlife violation and a count of wasting wildlife were dismissed.

She was sentenced to five years probation and 14 days compensatory service. Fees and assessments were $945.

During probation, neither Stevens nor Corliss is allowed to own any animals or reside with the other.

The animal neglect charges stemmed from the neglect of 16 horses and seven dogs from Jan. 8, 2008 to Nov. 29, 2008 at 28600 Jones Road.

The wildlife charges were connected to an illegally killed deer.

A Linn County Sheriff’s Office investigation led to the charges against Stevens and Corliss. Cases against them were filed on Jan. 30, 2009.
