Vincenzo “Jim” Trento, 94, died on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005.
He was born on Sept. 21, 1911 in Frosinone, Italy.
He came to the United States in 1929. He was 18 years old and arrived in New York by sea. During the Great Depression, he dug ditches for 5 cents an hour. He later made his way to Aliquippa, Pa., and through his father’s, Fermo Trento’s, naturalization, he proudly became a U.S. citizen on Nov. 27, 1939.
When he was 13, he worked on the family farm hand spading ground from sun up to sun down.
He married Clara Grace DeCecio of Ellwood City, Pa., on Oct. 24, 1935 in Aliquippa. He continued to live and work for J&L Steel Works in Aliquippa until 1944 when he moved to Fontana, Calif. There he worked for Kaiser Steel Corporation as a crane operator. He retired in 1971 and moved to Sweet Home to enjoy the outdoors.
He and his wife had one daughter.
He was active his entire life. He loved being in the sun and enjoyed fishing and gardening. He took pride in making wine and hand digging his own cellars in Fontana, the mountains of Lytle Creek, Calif., and Sweet Home.
He is survived by his sister, Maria Trento; brother, Gieseppe Trento of Frosinone; daughter, Loretta Warren of Sweet Home; two grandsons; two nephews; and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fermo and Anna Maria Trento of Italy; wife, Clara Trento; sister, Felice Trento; and grandson, Vincent Warren.
Rev. Father Henry Rufo officiated a funeral Mass on Oct. 1 at St. Helen’s Catholic Church. Final interment was at Gilliland Cemetery.
