For The New Era
The Sweet Home volleyball team wrapped up its season by paying tribute to the players and coaches that made up the squads on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
Coach Debbie Danielson first acknowledged the hard work of the junior varsity team under coach Jim Chroninger and the freshman squad led by Amanda Christenson, both of whom had winning seasons.
Then Danielson recounted the highlights of the varsity?s 16-14-3 season, one which led the Huskies to the brink of the state playoffs before being defeated by Cascade in the league playoffs. Danielson pointed out that the team had reached the finals of two tournaments, but spoke more positively about the team relationships that were made in such events as the team camp in Seaside, the team bonding night, and a rafting trip.
As Danielson introduced each team player, she noted each of their strong points. Team balance was a key part of the team?s success. Setter Julie Burcham spread out the opportunities among the hitters. Though Ashlee Flanagan led the team in kills with 99, Hannah Swanson, Sara Brocard, and Cait Thireault were all within 10 of that mark and sophomore Jessalyn Seiber also made a late charge with a high number of kills in the last part of the season.
Defensively, libero Michelle Cliver recorded the best serve receiving mark while Hannah Swanson led in the number of digs. Cait Thireault posted a team-high 74 blocks.
Breanne Messmer and Chelsea Gagner led the Huskies in serving percentage, though many were right around 90 percent, including Sam Pierce, Dani Thireault, and Erika Snow. Burcham recorded the most serves and service points while Swanson served up the most aces.
Danielson also announced the all-league selections. Hannah Swanson was voted as a unanimous first-team outside hitter. Second-team choices included Burcham as setter, Cliver as defensive specialist, Cait Thireault as middle hitter, and Brocard as an outside hitter. Honorable mention was given to Flanagan and Gagner.
Finally, the following team awards were given out: most inspirational, Erika Snow; most improved, Cait Thireault; best defense, Michelle Cliver; hustle award, Sara Brocard; and outstanding player, Hannah Swanson.
The Huskies will have to replace six seniors, including Swanson, Flanagan, both Cait and Dani Thireault, Gagner, and Pierce.
