Water polo MVPs are Martin, Jaques, Webb and Wilson

Cory Martin and Derek Jaques were named boys offensive and defensive players of the year at the water polo team’s awards dessert Monday night, Nov. 15.

Sami Webb was named girls offensive player of the year, while Cheryl Wilson was the defensive honoree.

The Huskies were short of female players this year so they had to field a mixed team, but Coach Craig Martin noted that eight players, including three girls, were named to the all-league team.

“This was, by far, our best year yet since our rise from the death of Husky water polo,” he said of the program, which was discontinued for a year before he took the reins three years ago. “When you have eight of 13 players make all-league off of a 13-player roster, that just shows how much this team has improved individually and collectively.”

The Huskies finished 7-8 overall and 5-3 in league this season, losing to powerhouse Parkrose in first round of the state playoffs.

Team captains, selected by the players, were Jaques and Alex Stupin, both seniors.

Freshman Sten Weld was named Most Improved Playter.

Third-year letter winners were: seniors Brandon Courteau, who spent most of the season in goal where he recorded 115 saves – and one goal-to-goal score; Jaques; who led the team with 52 goals; Stupin, who was third in scoring with 16 goals; Niccole Simmonds, who served as manager after injuring her shoulder and being unable to compete; Webb and Wilson; and juniors Cory Martin and Katie Turner.

Second-year letter winners were senior Josh Liskey and sophomores Elric Benson and Jake Johnson, who was second in scoring with 24 goals.

First-year letters went to sophomore Emily Claborn and freshmen Weld and Michael Moser.
