Water polo team loses heartbreaker on last-second goal

The Sweet Home water polo team lost a heartbreaker in overtime against league rival South Albany in a defensive battle Thursday at Husky Pool,

The Huskies, who put a combined team (boys and girls) in the pool against the all-male Rebels, jumped out to an early lead, scoring on their first several possessions before the game entered a see-saw defensive battle with the score tied 3-3 entering the fourth quarter of play.

Both squads scored twice in regulation to take the game into overtime. The defensive battle continued through both overtime periods until South Albany clinched the victory with a go-ahead goal with three seconds left to win 8-7.

Scoring for the Huskies were seniors Alex Stupin amd Derek Jaques and junior Cory Martin. The entire team contributed to the offensive output and strong defense to keep the game close until the end, Coach Craig Martin said.

“Our teams match up very well in strength and speed,” Martin said. “We had a few minor defensive breakdowns that were capitalized on by the South Albany team that ultimately cost us the win”. Coach Martin was pleased with his team’s effort in spite of the loss. “We are improving each game in our individual and team skills. Our effort and teamwork is great everyday at practice and the rewards are showing up in the level of play in our games.”

He said the Huskies hoped to avenge their early-season narrow loss at home to Marist as they took on the Spartans Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Amazon Pool in Eugene.
