The summer high school baseball team finished with a pair of losses in a best-of-three playoff series against West Albany Saturday, 5-2 at home and Monday 7-4 on the road.
“West Albany is one of the top 5A programs in the state,” said Coach Matt Matuszak. West Albany lost 1-0 in the state semi-finals in the spring.
“I’m just really pleased we could compete on that level,” he said. “Athletically, we’re almost as good as they are. I was really pleased with the outcome this weekend and the summer overall.”
This summer has been about playing the toughest competition possible, the top 5A and 6A schools, and improving, he said. “We scheduled them for a reason – to make ourselves better, and I think we accomplished that.”
The experience the Huskies have gained will carry into the season next spring and make the Huskies a better team, he said.
During the series, catcher Nate Melcher stepped up and threw out five West Albany base runners, Matuszak said. “Which is just phenomenal. He’s worked hard all summer and improved his game a lot.”
Justin Rice and Cory Hanks both threw their games well, he said. Rice and Drayson Scott also had three hits each Monday night.
Matuszak wanted to thank the community and fans for their support.
It’s been a long five months, counting spring and summer baseball, he said, and the team is already excited about next season.
