Woman gets 13 months, fine for burning child

Krystal Humphries, 24, was sentenced on Oct. 22 to 13 months in prison on five charges connected with assaulting and burning her boyfriend’s 2 1/2-year-old child in February.

She pleaded guilty to attempted assault, a class B felony; two counts of criminal mistreatment, a class C felony; and two counts of third-degree assault, a class C felony.

Dismissed were first-degree assault, a class A felony; two counts of criminal mistreatment; and third-degree assault.

Her sentence included prison and five years of probation. She also must pay $5,365 in fines and fees.

During probation, she is not permitted to have contact with the victim or the victim’s residence. She also must submit to a mental health evaluation.

On Feb. 26, the child was treated at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital for second- and third-degree burns. Police were notified.

Police learned that the child was in the care of Humphries, the live-in girlfriend to the child’s father, Benjamin Moore.

While Moore was at work, according to SHPD Det. Cyndi Pichardo, Humphries allegedly assaulted the child repeatedly. The child was hit with a spoon, which resulted in bruising; and the child was burned on a heater.

Police arrested Humphries for third-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment on Feb. 27.

Humphries was indicted by a Linn County grand jury on March 19.

The child’s biological mother has custody, Pichardo said after the indictment. The child “will require ongoing medical care and treatment of her injuries.”
