A 2-year-old girl was killed when she was struck by a pickup in Sweet Home Friday morning, June 5.
According to police, at approximately 10:04 a.m. Friday, Sweet Home Police Department and the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District personnel responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash in the area of 12th Avenue and Hawthorne Street.
Police Chief Jeff Lynn said the toddler was in a jogging stroller being pushed by her mother, southbound on 12th Avenue at Hawthorne Street.
The vehicle was stopped at the intersection of Hawthorne Street and 12th Avenue, preparing to turn north onto 12th as the stroller neared the intersection, Lynn said.
At some point, the child fell out of the jogging stroller and into the roadway, and was struck by the vehicle.
Lynn said he would not release the mother’s or child’s names.
The vehicle was a 2011 Chevy Silverado PK being operated by Amanda M. Cockrell, 42, of Sweet Home, according to police records.
When emergency responders arrived, they found the child, who was transported by Sweet Home medics to the Lebanon Community Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased, police said.
Members of the Linn County Major Accident Investigation Team, which consists of the Oregon State Police, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the Lebanon Police Department, and the Albany Police Department responded to assist with the investigation, which closed off several blocks of 12th Avenue for most of the morning and early afternoon.
Lynn said there didn’t appear to be anything that could be considered criminal in what happened.
“It really looks like a tragic set of circumstances that really will impact both sets of families forever,” he said.
“All involved have cooperated fully with the investigation,” Lynn said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved in this tragic death.”
