Sweet Home Code Enforcement Officer Mikayla Rossiter wants to remind residents that it’s time to cut their grass and tall weeds.
Grass must be kept under 10 inches, Rossiter said. If tall grass is not cut by June 15, the traditional beginning of fire season, the city will hire a mower to cut the grass and then charge the property owner for the cost, plus a 30 percent administrative charge.
Prior to June 15, owners can be cited for problem yards as part of the city’s code enforcement process, Rossiter said. Citations can result in fines of up to $300 per day of violation.
The June 15 deadline can be moved up if Linn County fire chiefs choose an earlier date for the beginning of fire season.
With the heavy rain followed by nice weather, grass and weeds are growing quickly, Rossiter said. Some areas are up to 2 or 3 feet already, she said. People who do not have a lawnmower can contact the city for a list of people who cut lawns, Rossiter said. She can be reached at 367-4554.
