Oct. 22, 1927 – May 31, 2012
Betty Iona Hugley, 83, of Sweet Home died May 31, 2012.
She was born Oct. 22, 1927 in Duluth, Minn. to Martin and Anna (Schaff) Amundson.
After graduating from high school, she moved from Minnesota to Oregon with her family. She met Donald Hugley and they married March 13, 1946.
Mr. Hugley joined the Army and served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. Mrs. Hughley raised her family and lived in Sweet Home most of her life. She loved being a housewife and mother. They had three devoted children, with whom they lived and worked closely with all of their lives.
Mrs. Hugley came from a family of avid music lovers and talented musicians, and her branch of the family would carve their niche in the world of music. For many decades the Hugleys, with their children Ronald, Melody and Nancy and, on occasion, other family members, toured and performed country music under such names as “The Red Hewads” and “Surefire Country.” Family was the most important thing to Mrs. Hugley and she was the “go-to” person for everyone in her large and extended family.
She conformed to her roles as mother and an elder sister naturally and completely. She was well known for her caring demeanor, her youthful humor and good ol’ dose of kitchen gossip. She was a truly unique woman and there will never be another one like her.
She will be dearly missed by all who loved her, but her influential leadership and strength will live on through the many people and lives she touched.
The Hugleys were long-time members of the Sweet Home Veterans.
Mrs. Hugley is survived by her son, Ronald Hugley; daughters Melody Ferdani and Nancy Berggren, all of Sweet Home; brothers Eugene Amundson of Sweet Home and Eldon Schaff of Baker City; sister Anita Clifton of Sweet Home; six grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald in 2007; four brothers, Floyd, Arne, Richard and Ike; and two sisters, Lucinda and Luella.
A VFW Auxiliary Remembrance Memorial was held June 10 at Gilliland Cemetery, followed by a memorial potluck reception at the Sweet Home VFW. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking all monetary donations be made to the Betty Hugley memorial fund at Wells Fargo bank.
Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.
