Sweet Home’s girls finished the first day of the district tournament at Santiam Country Club in Stayton Monday in fourth place out of seven teams.
The Huskies shot 482 as a team, led by sophomores Haley May’s 92 and Alayna Davis’ 100. May was tied for third after Day 1 and Davis was seventh.
The team is rounded out by sophomore Liz Chelstad and freshman Nichole Grady, for whom this was their first varsity tournament.
“We have two girls who’ve never played a varsity round before,” said Assistant Coach Alan May, who led the team while Coach Pat Davis accompanied the boys.
“We have two first-year and two second-year players.”
The top five individuals and the top three teams will qualify for the state tournament May 16-17 at Eagle Crest.
After Monday’s round, Stayton and Blanchet were tied at 414, with Taft third at 435, led by the top individual, Maya Hatton, who shot an 82. Katie Goodwin of Blanchet was second, with an 86 followed by Haley May and Ellie Baddeley of Stayton.
On the boys side, the Huskies struggled Monday at their district tournament at Tokatee in Blue River, shooting a team score of 453 to put them in seventh place out of nine teams.
They shot a 405 on the same course last week, but Coach Pat Davis said the course was set up much tougher this time, with faster greens.
“League-wise, the scores were high for everybody,” he said.
Sophomore Jake Hindmarsh led Sweet Home with a 97, and freshman Jackson Lynn had a 103.
“We’ll see what tomorrow brings,” Davis said Monday night.
The boys state tournament will be May 16-17 at Emerald Valley in Creswell.
