Boys earn hoops win at Ridgeview

The Sweet Home High School boys basketball team built an dominating lead through the third quarter against Ridgeview High School in Redmond on Saturday and then held on against a fourth-quarter rally to win 72-66.

In the first week of basketball, the Huskies lost a close one to Stayton 69-66 on Dec. 4 and the first game of a tournament to Redmond 61-44 at Redmond Friday night, followed by a win the second day.

“We played a great first three quarters and went into the fourth with a 24-point lead,” said Coach Tim Porter. “We had a letdown in the fourth but were still able to come away with the win.”

In that game, the Huskies led 26-15 after one quarter and 46-29 at halftime. They expanded their lead to 65-41 in the third quarter.

“We put a lot of pressure on them,” Porter said. “We created a lot of turnovers.”

In the fourth quarter, Ridgeview closed the gap to just six points before the clock ran out.

“I think what happened is in the fourth quarter, we just let down,” Porter said. “We thought we had it in the bag.”

And while it got to keep its win, the team came away with a lesson, Porter said. The players need to continue pouring it on.

Bryce Daniels led scoring with 23 points. Hunter Jutte and Grant Kauffman added 18 points each; Christian Porter, nine; and Jason Sarter, two.

Redmond 61, Sweet Home 44

An aggressive third quarter helped Redmond defeat the Huskies 61-44.

Redmond led 19-11 after one quarter, but the Huskies closed that lead by halftime, trailing just 32-17. Redmond outscored the Huskies 17-6 in the third to seal its win.

Daniels led scoring with 18 points, and Kauffman added 15.

Against Stayton, the score was tied 12-12 after one quarter, but the Eagles edged ahead 38-30 by halftime, and by the end of the third, Stayton led 52-45.

“It was really well-played by both teams,” Porter said.

The Huskies struggled at the foul line, shooting just 4-9, while Stayton sank 10-16 free throws, Porter said. “That’s the game.”

Scoring was led by Kauffman with 32 points. Jutte added 12.
