Sept. 7, 1950

Jackie and Ed Bishop, Sweet Home brothers wanted in this area by federal, state and county law enforcement agencies, were captured by police in Oklahoma. They were caught as they fled from an alleged robbery in California where their companion, James R. Harris, was wounded in a gun battle. The Bishop brothers are wanted here on charges of forgery and stealing payroll checks from Oregon Plywood.

Sept. 4, 1975

Building permits for a dozen $19,000-plus houses in the Carmel Addition (Kalmia Street, east of 22nd Street) swelled the August building permit total to the highest of the year – $425,061. Another factor in the surge was a $169,000 permit for a remodel and addition to the East Linn Medical Center.

A familiar figure in the Sweet Home yards of Burlington Northern railway, Carl Smock, made his last run this week before retiring. A railroader since 1929, he was the senior conductor for the Northwest District of Burlington Northern. He was switch foreman in the Sweet Home yard when he retired.

Sept. 6, 2000

The school district welcomed 28 new teachers to the fold this week. They are Melinda Ball, Deidra Barkalow, Ken Benson, Chemen Clearwaters, Susie Cobb, Denny Denfeld, Carol Fleenor, Cathy Forster, Jeff Freeman, Dean Friesen, LoriAnn Fuller, Brian Gold, James Hawkins, Jocelyn Henderson,

New restrooms in the Quartzville Corridor at Moose and Trout creeks are among proposed initiatives planned by the Corps of Engineers as they attempt to balance recreation, safety, sanitation and protection of natural resources.
