Late trains are the principal cause of overdue Christmas mail delivery, but mail carriers will deliver gifts on Christmas Day. The local post office is faced with an economy wave, ordered by congress through the postmaster general. A recent train strike complicated difficulties for post offices with fewer part-time employees than usual. Sweet Home has four foot carriers (one full day, one part day, and two substitutes) handling the holiday mail. So far they processed 96,424 letters between Dec. 12-19.
A log from Yellowstone mountain caught attention as it was halted near the Midway scales while the truck driver from Ripple Creek Logging Company waited for a special hauling permit and made repairs to his truck. The 34-foot Douglas fir’s diameter was an average 95” and weighed more than 50 tons. It contained an estimated 13,380 board feet.
Four Holley residents are going to foot the bill to install four street lights because they “want to see what’s going on.” It will be worth the cost, they said, because people will be able to see driveways, turns and the bridge, but the lights also might slow traffic down. The lights will illuminate the area at the foot of a descending curve and west of the bridge.

The Enchanted Teen Castle at 1256 Main St. lost a lot of its enchantment, but may be in for a spiritual uplifting. Debt, theft and vandalism threaten the center’s continued existence, but Rev. Richard Stevens of the Nazarene Church will now manage the pool hall and soda fountain because some teens asked for help to stop the closure.
A furnace room fire at the junior high caused about $2,000 in damage. The fan to the furnace was turned off, causing coils to overheat. The fire started in the wood ceiling of the room. The fire was discovered by the milkman at about 6 a.m.

The Linn County Commissioners signed a proclamation opposing the hostile takeover bid of Willamette Industries by Weyerhaeuser Co., stating “We should all be concerned about any further concentration of corporate economic power with the accompanying reduction in market competitions.”
An evening windstorm blasted through Sweet Home, leaving piles of debris strewn throughout the area. Trees and a temporary fence were blown down. The wind caused temporary power fluctuations and power outages in scattered locations.
