Sweet Home’s girls should be turning some heads by now as they finished their first two weeks of the basketball preseason with a 3-2 record after a loss at Cottage Grove, then bouncing back with a win over South Umpqua last week.
The Huskies fell 52-20 at Cottage Grove on Tuesday, Dec. 9, in a game where, “people weren’t ready to come out and play basketball,” Coach Erika Evans said.
“That happens every once in a while,” she said, adding that the team had some sickness.
Brooke Elder led the Huskies with 12 points, including going 4 for 6 from the three-point zone.
“There was still good stuff that came out of it,” Evans said.
At home Wednesday, Dec. 10, against South Umpqua, things were different in a 50-24 win..
Sweet Home started a little slow, Evans said, but in the second half the Huskies picked up the pace and pulled away, which, she said, was a learning experience for her players.
“This season, so far, we’ve played every type of game and a lot of them are games in which we haven’t gotten those experiences before, of dominating teams and coming back from deficits and being in overtime situations.
“This time they came out slow and still finished strong. They came out handily on top in that game.”
Addy Vannice finished with 11 assists and four steals and Aubrey Newberry had a double-double, scoring 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Aaliyah Brown was the top scorer, with 14
Addie had 11 assists and four steals, and Aubrey had a double double. She had 13 points and 212 rebounds. Those are my two tops. And then Aaliyah was our leading scorer with 14 points, along with nine rebounds and four steals.
“We have people heading all kinds of stat categories, even on days we’re not like performing our best or feeling our best. So it was a productive week,” Evans said.
The Huskies host Estacada Tuesday, Dec. 16, followed by a road game on Thursday, Dec. 18, at Molalla before taking a break for Christmas.
They will be back in action Sunday, Dec. 28, at the Astoria Tournament, which runs through Dec. 30.
