Central defeated the Huskies 11-3 in boys soccer Monday evening.
The score in the first half was 8-0. The second half was 3-3.
“That’s the story of the season,” Coach Al Grove said. “We can’t play two halves, except in a couple of games.”
Central, ranked number two in the state, controlled the ball and passed it well, Grove said. “They pressured us, and we just didn’t play well the first half.”
Isaiah Blake scored two of the Huskies’ goals, one on a penalty kick. Brock Crocker scored a goal off a deflection on a corner kick.
Nearly every team the Huskies have faced this year has won the game in the first half, with the Huskies making a run at it in the second half, Grove said. Scappoose was the only time the Huskies put two halves together for a win. Even in a 1-1 tie with Taft, the problem plagued Sweet Home.
The difference between the two halves isn’t because opponents are switching out players, Grove said. They’re running the same players in both halves, but the Huskies are consistently outplayed in the first half.
The Huskies also lost 5-1 to Newport on the road Thursday.
Newport led 5-0 after one half. Mitchell Grove scored the team’s only goal in the second half.
The Huskies face Philomath, a top-five team, in their final appearance at home Thursday, Oct. 29.
They finish the season at Taft on Monday.
