Council hires firm to design City Hall interior

The Sweet Home City Council last week accepted a $6,000 quote from Scott/Edwards Architecture for schematic designs, preliminary engineering and cost estimates to reconstruct the interior of a new City Hall.

The city purchased the building at 3225 Main St., the former U.S. Forest Service Sweet Home Ranger District office, earlier this year for $750,000.

City officials contacted three architect services for quotes, said Finance Director Pat Gray. Scott/ Edwards provided a quote for $6,000, while gLAs Architecture proposed $6,500 and BBL Architects quoted $22,072.50.

The funds will be paid from the city’s Building Reserve Fund.

“It’s nice to have somebody come in who will say these are your options,” Gray said. “They’re going to give us three to five options of what do you want to do with this building. Here’s some ideas, and this is what it’s going to cost you, where they know the business and what people are paying for things.”

Scott/Edwards designed the Jim Riggs Community Center. BBL designed the Police Department, and gLAs designed the Fire Hall.

That gave the council “three quotes from reputable firms that have done work in Sweet Home,” said City Attorney Robert Snyder.

Councilor Jeff Goodwin likes Scott/Edward’s work, he said. The Jim Riggs Community Center is well-designed and functional.

He moved to hire Scott/Edwards. The council voted 7-0 to accept the quote.

Present at the meeting were councilors James Goble, Ryan Underwood, Greg Mahler, Mayor Jim Gourley, Dave Trask, Goodwin and Diane Gerson.

In other business, the council:

n Approved the Sankey Park Conceptual Redesign Plan created by the University of Oregon Community Planning Workshop 6-1. Voting yes were Underwood, Mahler, Gourley, Trask, Goodwin and Gerson. Goble voted no.

The plan calls for more than $417,000 in improvements and updates to Sankey Park.

n Approved contracting with BRX, Inc., of Albany for a waterline replacement project at a cost of $98,425.

The council voted 7-0.

BRX was among nine bidding on the project, with bids reaching a high of $141,510.75. BRX was the low bidder.

The project will replace a leaky 2-inch waterline on Cedar Street between 16th and 17th avenues and a 1-inch line on Elm Street east of Mountain View Road.

“This is part of the capital improvement plan for waterline replacement,” said Public Works Director Mike Adams. Money from the water depreciation fund will replace a leaky 2-inch line with 6-inch line.

The project will eliminate an estimated monthly loss of 360,000 gallons, Adams said.

Elm Street serves three or four residences, he said. “We did some checking. It’s got very low water pressure.”

n Appointed high school sophomores Sarah Hewitt and Madelyn Neuschwander and junior Chase Boyd to serve on the Youth Advisory Council.

The YAC has one remaining vacancy for a junior high student.
