Christmas activities in town this year include the annual Christmas tree party sponsored by the Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce, a musical Yuletide pageant at the high school featuring “The Christmas Story,” and a visit with Santa in front of the community Christmas tree on Main Street. Oak Heights and Long Street school children presented an original program on the origin of Christmas symbols.

 

The Sweet Home VFW announced that marble shooters in the area will try their skill under competitive fire next spring. Community competitions will narrow down the finalists to take part in a district marble tournament, and the top three from districts will go on to a state competition.

 

The county health officer warned residents about unscrupulous septic cleaners who are claiming residents’ septic tanks need to be cleaned and then charge an unreasonable fee.

 

Dec. 19, 1974

 

Third graders at Hawthorne Elementary did away with the annual gift exchange this year due to the high cost of things and the employment situation. Instead, they contributed canned food to the local Christmas basket drive sponsored by the Sweet Home Ministerial Association and Sweet Home Volunteer Fire Department.

 

High school students Cathy Baumgartner and Leigh Ann Johnson are spearheading a drive to save one of Oregon’s oldest landmarks, the McLoughlin House in Oregon City. As co-chairmen of the Coast Valley League’s Bicentennial Committee, they hope their efforts will help renovate the building in time for the country’s bicentennial celebration.

The school board approved a proposal to partially open the high school track. The track was closed last summer to competitive athletics due to safety concerns, including a worn surface. The track and field are in need of a number of repairs that will cost a couple hundred thousand dollars. The proposal calls for limited home meets and prohibits the use of the two inner lanes.
