Gasoline dealers met with the mayor to determine how they might be able to alleviate the city’s shortage of fuel. Gas stations have had difficulty obtaining additional gas allocations. Guaranteed gasoline membership cards (entitling holders to 48 gallons per month at Cheap Charlies or Big Gallon) are being criticized and its legality questioned. Ripley’s Chevron station was approved to receive 8,500 gallons through “exceptional hardship assistance” from the Oregon Energy Allocation.

Debate arose during a public hearing at City Council regarding 56 acres to be purchased by Merle Ream who wants his property annexed into the city for log storage use. Residents along Clark Mill Road adjacent to the Ream property purchase oppose the annexation, stating traffic created by Morse Bros. is bad enough and additional use by logging trucks would be intolerable.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to ask local agencies and the South Santiam Four Wheelers Association to meet and discuss possible solutions to problems presented by persons gathering on Quartzville and North River roads the night before the annual Foster Mud Flats event. On that night, Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and Sweet Home Police Department responded to a fight that resulted in two men going to jail and one to the hospital, along with others who were injured.

Plans to put in a Rite Aid at the corner of 12th and Main streets have been abandoned. Hummelt Development had been working on a deal to purchase property from Jim Lewis (owner of Santiam Supply), Manuel Victor and other property owners from 12th Avenue to the A&W between Main and Nandina streets. They wanted to install a drive-thru, and offered to buy out local pharmacies. Nancy Brewer, owner of Savory Palate, had moved her restaurant to the former location of Big Town Hero and was planning to close her business if the Rite Aid sale went through.

Monica Jeppsen shared her story about how she prayed about becoming a model with Christian-based Mode Models of Canada. She spent two months in Los Angeles working on benefit shows, and doing magazine ads and print work for K-Mart. Then she went to Japan for work, doing a lot of magazine work and shots for Japanese Amway. Since test photos were free there, she loaded up her portfolio. She plans to marry Nat Graves next month.
