The Roy Clover Memorial Fountain planned for installation at Osage Park will be inaccessible to most of the public after Highway 20 widening is complete. As such, City Manager David Crutcher recommended the council find a different location for the fountain. He told the council that the state recommended the city close the street at 1st Avenue and Highway 20, and the city allow the park to be screened from the highway.

The city is two steps closer to having free parking downtown after the city council approved readings of an ordinance amending the city parking ordinance. Expected to pass next month, city staff are prepared to replace the parking meters with signs announcing 15 minute or two hour parking spots. The city manager said the time limits will be strictly enforced, with fines between 50 cents and $2.50 for those parked beyond the time limit.

A new event – a bicycle marathon – was added to the Sportsman’s Holiday schedule for this year. The marathon will be for teams of four riders and run as a relay, with each rider taking turns covering an approximate 10 mile course. Initial course plans indicate it will start downtown, circle around Foster Lake and return to downtown. Canceled this year are hydroplane races due to the gas shortage.

Janet Westberry’s frog, “Klomp,” jumped 13’ 8”, winning against about 250 contenders in the Champion Frog in the State meet in Jefferson. Klomp now qualifies to enter the 1975 finals at the National Frog Jumping Contest in California. Westberry, 13, has been jumping frogs since she was 5. Troy Sylvester, 5, of Crawfordsville, took first place in the Junior Division with the heaviest entrant, a two-pound bullfrog owned by his dad, Leroy Sylvester.
