Police Officer Albert Osborn was cleared of a manslaughter charge at a preliminary hearing this week. The justice of the peace determined there was not enough sufficient evidence to warrant prosecution regarding the shooting of a Lebanon man following a chase. Osborn said he pulled his gun to use as a sap and the man was shot during a scuffle for the weapon.
A barker operator for Oregon Plywood Corporation, Albert Walz, lost consciousness while standing on a log in the company pond. Francis Andrews saw his pole floating in the water and bubbles rising in the water. He used a pike pole to pull Walz from the water. Two other men used artificial respiration on Walz for 45 minutes before he showed signs of life.
William Mosher, of Lebanon, was killed while working on the Miller and Hodges logging operations on Upper Soda Creek. He was working as a bucker and was caught between two logs when one rolled down on him from above, crushing him.
Redwood Empire Shows will open for a five-day run this month. The carnival, under sponsorship of the Post 133 American Legion, will be set up between Sweet Home and Foster.
Thirty five entries so far have been registered for the baby personality contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. The youngest entrant so far is 2 ½ months old. The contest is for children up to five years old.
Steps were taken to begin the formation of a new county in East Linn after a group of people decided it was a good idea. Eighteen of 27 people present at the first official meeting – held at Mollie’s Bakery – indicated they favored the plan for a new county. They call themselves the Citizens Committee for a New County, elected executive committee members and suggested calling the new county Santiam County, to encompass the boundaries of the Sweet Home School District.
Contractors for the city began working on the Midway area contaminated well water mitigation project. Using a $704,000 grant, the city is installing new water lines between 42nd and 47th avenues. The new lines will require hookup by 32-35 residents in a “critically affected” area, which could cost some homeowners as much as $712. The project includes areas identified with well contamination by chlorinated solvents.
The Sweet Home Rodeo is moving from 49th Avenue to its new 15-acre site on Long Street. A groundbreaking was held last week, during which time the 2000 rodeo queen was announced as April Meyers. The selection of a rodeo queen is a return to the roots of the rodeo.
