The chief of police expressed relief for the minimal damage occurring during Hallowe’en. A few broken street lights was the only real damage reported. Business’ display windows received a thorough “soaping” and practically every home in the community was subjected to “attack” by trick-or-treaters.

Frank Steingrandt was killed when he was struck by a car as he walked on Highway 20. The tall spare man of more than 70 was enroute to his home in the Sunnyside district from Sweet Home when a driver hit him. Witnesses said Steingardt was directly in the traffic lane and the driver couldn’t see him until it was too late. This was at least the third time Steingardt had been treated for injuries received from being hit by cars during his habitual walking trips into town.

For the first time in its six years of existence, there are now vacancies there.

City Councilman Frank Kikel wants to serve at least one more term until the Foster-Midway annexation controversy is settled. But he sees other problems facing the council, as well, such as the impacts of area layoffs and the problem of a more stabilized and diversified industry in the area. “We need additional industry so we’re not so blasted dependent on the lumber industry,” he said. Kikel also noted street improvements must be addressed. The council will have to “bite the bullet” and initiate street improvements regardless of public sentiment.

The school board approved $668,000 in cuts to the budget as a result of low student enrollment. The board had anticipated growth in the district by 65 students and built its budget around that, but enrollment ultimately decreased instead by 71 students, resulting in a total projected loss of 136.
