75 years ago: Sept. 22, 1949
The Tiny Tots Popularity Contest for kids 6 and under is now underway in connection with the home talent stage show, Laff It Off, which is being held in the L Street grade school gym for the benefit of the local polio emergency fund. Parents must create a voting jar with a snapshot of their child. The jars will be placed around town where the public may vote by dropping coins; each penny counts as one vote.
50 years ago: Sept. 19, 1974
City Council approved a major revamping of the city’s solid waste collection program including a possible rate increase. A long-standing complaint against Linn County was settled when the county paid $2,000 as its share of the cost to operate Sweet Home’s solid waste collection station, along with an agreement to include rate changes and the city taking over more operation of the Pleasant Valley dump site.
Linn County deputies seized more than 700 marijuana plants seven miles from the Holley store on the upper Calapooia River. No arrests were made. They estimated the plants, which were not fully mature, were capable of producing about 30 pounds of marijuana with a street value of about $6,200.
25 years ago: Sept. 22, 1999
Eight trees were removed from the high school, some of which were 70-80 years old, due to rot. Removed were two Douglas firs, two catalpas, one locust, one English walnut and two hawthornes. The walnut tree was 36” diameter at the stump. The wood was given away, except the walnut, which is being used by the high school wood shop.
