Sweet Home’s girls were fourth among 18 teams Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Harrisburg All Girls wrestling tournament.

The Huskies, missing some key performers, finished with 101 points, behind Harrisburg, which was third with 105. Dallas won the tournament with 211.5 points, followed by Crook County with 130.

Bailey Chafin (125 pounds) and Madi Looney (140) were the Huskies’ top placewinners, both taking second.

Chafin pinned her first two opponents before losing 10-2 to Crook County’s Taylor Echeverria in the final.

Looney pinned Edna Montes of Eagle Point to reach the 140-pound final, then lost by a fall to Danin Lacouture of Siuslaw.

Finishing fourth were Alizeah Weikel at 115 and Bella Rico at 130.

Natasha Marin (100) and Eturnyti Allison (145) finished fifth.

In sixth for Sweet Home were Averi Temple (100) and Lyla Ventura (110).

On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Huskies hosted North Marion, the boys winning 70-11. Girls’ scores were not available.

It was the first time since 1997 that the 6A Division Vikings have visited Sweet Home in wrestling, Coach Steve Thorpe said.

en route to a takedown and a pin.

He and North Salem Coach Andrew Pickett had wanted a girls match and Pickett figured out how to adjust his schedule to bring the boys as well, Thorpe said.

Girls results were not available.

“It’s hard, sometimes, getting someone here to wrestle us, because this is a tough place to come and wrestle,” Thorpe said. “So it was nice. It was good for them and we got matches.

“I was pretty excited to get the outcome we had.”

Keegan Jefferson moved up a weight to 113 and scored a major decision, and Tytus Hardee “beat a good kid,” pinning Benjamin Crazybull at 126, he said.

Russell Dickerman also scored a win with stitches in his face and wearing a facemask, Thorpe noted.

Sweet Home will celebrate Senior Night Thursday, Feb. 6. The Huskies will host Philomath’s boys and girls teams starting at 6 p.m.

The boys will travel to Tillamook Tuesday, Feb. 11, for their final dual of the season, while the girls prepare for their district tournament, which will be Feb. 14-15 at Cottage Grove.
