Sweet Home’s boys golf team opened its season Thursday with a fourth-place finish in a field of seven teams at the Marist Invitational at Tokatee Golf Course.
Marist, which Sweet Home Coach Tom Horn said is probably the state’s top 4A team, ran away with the tournament, scoring 293. Junction City was second with 369, followed by Cascade Christian (370), Sweet Home (381), North Bend (384), South Umpqua (401) and Elmira (404).
Marist’s Alan Kelly was the medalist, shooting 71.
“When you shoot five over for four guys in high school on a tough course, that is an awesome team,” Horn said.
Taylor Huschka was low scorer for the Huskies, shooting 38-46-84, finishing in the top 10 for the tournament. Travis Ramos shot 45-44-89, Nick Zahler 52-48-100, Nick Pitts 58-60-118 and Marcus Thedford 54-54-108.
“I was mildly disappointed with our opening round,” Horn said. “My number one played fairly well, though he got into a little slump with four double bogeys on the back nine.”
He said that Ramos shot about what he expected, but the other three could have done better.
The Huskies are back in action April 2 at Lincoln City’s Salishan Country Club for their opening match of the ValCo League season.
